The US Department of Transportation (DOT) and their <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phmsa.dot.gov\/\">Pipeline and Hazardous Materials SafetyAdminsitration<\/a> (PHMSA) set <a class=\"ek-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phmsa.dot.gov\/training\/hazmat\/hazmat-transportation-requirements-pdf\">regulations<\/a> at the Federal level. Your state DOT, highway patrol and local regulators often add their own system of regulations and permitting as well.<br><br>There are basically basically 3 options for explosives transportation:<br>1. Use a common carrier such as <a href=\"https:\/\/fedex.com\">Fedex<\/a>, UPS or a HAZMAT trucking company<br>2. Have your materials delivered straight to the jobsite by your powder vendor<br>3. Self-transport of loads not requiring placarding. (See <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/chp800c.pdf\">CHP Publication 800<\/a> for California)<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What does placarding mean?<\/strong><br>You&#8217;ve probably seen many placarded loads on the highway.  Fuel trucks are the most common, with the large &#8220;Flammable&#8221; DOT signs on the sides.  <br><br>If you haul any quantity of 1.1 explosive material on a public highway, you are most likely required to placard.  Lesser hazmat classes such as 1.4 and 1.5 over 1,000lbs also require placarding.  <br><br>Placarding brings a number of requirements, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Commercial Driver&#8217;s License (CDL) with HAZMAT endorsement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>$5M in commercial over-the-road liability insurance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>PHMSA Registration, permits and record-keeping requirements<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Driver and Employee Training Program<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DOT physicals for all drivers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Random drug testing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>DOT inspection of all tractors and trailers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety and Security plan<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>State DOT, local permits, designated travel routes and other requirements that vary by location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1_4S-hazmat-1024x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-380 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1_4S-hazmat-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1_4S-hazmat-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1_4S-hazmat-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1_4S-hazmat-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1_4S-hazmat-1536x1536.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/1_4S-hazmat.jpg 1603w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>What can I carry unplacarded?<\/strong><br>It is possible to carry up <strong>1,000lbs<\/strong> of class <strong>1.4<\/strong> or <strong>1.5<\/strong> material in most states without triggering the placarding material. This includes interstate and &#8220;in-commerce&#8221; work as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Examples of 1.4 Material:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accxresearch.com\/content\/product-sales\/non-detonating-1-4s-cartridges\/\" class=\"ek-link\">Class 1.4S rock breaking cartridges<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Most detonators\/blasting caps in 1.4B or 1.4S material<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Detonating cord 100gr\/ft and under, gross weight under 100lbs.
